MyMedicare
What is MyMedicare

MyMedicare is a government program that aims to formalise the relationship between patients and their regular general practice or practitioner.

It is voluntary and free to register in MyMedicare.

Benefits

When you register in MyMedicare, it will notify your general practice that you have chosen them as your regular care team.

Once registered you'll have access to:
-
greater continuity of care with your registered practice, which has been demonstrated to improve health outcomes
-
longer Medicare Benefit Scheme (MBS) funded telehealth consultations with your GP
-
triple bulk billing incentive for longer MBS telehealth consultations for children under 16, pensioners, and concession card holders. From 1 November 2025, this incentive will expand to all Medicare-eligible patients registered with MyMedicare
-
the General Practice in Aged Care Incentive program that provides more regular visits from a GP and better care planning for people living in a residential aged care home
Eligibility
You’re eligible to register in MyMedicare if you have:
-
a Medicare Card or Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) Veteran Card and
-
had two face-to-face visits recorded with the same practice in the previous 24 months

Check here for more information on eligibility.

How to Register

It’s simple. You can either register online or in person at our practice.

Online via myGov
-
Sign in to myGov and select Medicare
-
Select ‘Register for MyMedicare'
-
Select Ashburton Family Practice under ‘search for your practice’
-
Select your preferred GP
-
Complete the voluntary 'About You' information
-
Submit your registration, then follow the prompts to complete your registration

You can choose to withdraw from MyMedicare at any time.

If you register for MyMedicare at a different practice to the one you initially registered with, this will automatically withdraw the previous registration and notify the practice.

If you experience any difficulties registering or transferring your registration, the practice can submit a request on your behalf. You will then receive a notification prompting you to finalise the process.

If you have any further questions or would like to discuss MyMedicare, please contact the practice or book an appointment with your regular GP.
